In this lesson, we explore modeling with MoGraph tools in Cinema 4D — a powerful, flexible approach to generating repetitive and parametric geometry like sprinkles, staircases, and pegboards.
We start by creating basic sprinkle shapes using a Capsule primitive along with a Star spline inside an Extrude generator. These objects are placed into a Cloner set to Object Mode, targeting the surface of an icing mesh. We adjust the Count, set the Distribution to Surface, and ensure Align Clone is enabled so the sprinkles sit properly along the mesh contours.
To fix overlapping sprinkles, we apply a Push Apart Effector, adjusting its Radius to maintain clean spacing or using its mode settings to hide intersecting clones entirely. We then introduce the Random Effector to randomize clone Rotation for a more natural look. To remove unwanted sprinkles appearing underneath the icing, we use MoGraph Selection combined with Hide Selected (while holding Shift to modify the selection) to clean up the placement.
Next, we demonstrate building a staircase using a simple Cube primitive inside a Cloner set to Linear Mode. By adjusting the transform controls along the Y and Z axes, we align the steps diagonally and scale the original cube to update all clones simultaneously. We then duplicate the step geometry, convert it to an editable object, and use polygon modeling in a side view to extrude and align side rails flush with the stairs.
Finally, we create a pegboard using a combination of spline generators and MoGraph. A small Circle spline is cloned into a grid, then placed inside a Connect Object (with Weld disabled) to merge the splines into a single connected source. We pair this with a rounded Rectangle spline inside a Spline Mask Generator set to A Subtract B to cut out the hole pattern. Placing the Spline Mask into an Extrude generator creates the solid board, and we finalize the model by enabling a subtle bevel inside the Caps tab.
Hold Alt while creating a generator or cloner to automatically make the selected object its child.
Use the Push Apart Effector to quickly resolve intersecting clones in surface-based cloning.
MoGraph Selection paired with Hide Selected provides precise control over individual clones without breaking the Cloner setup.
Combine a Connect Object with a Spline Mask to perform complex boolean operations across multiple cloned splines.
Utilize the built-in Caps tab inside Extrude objects to add non-destructive bevels directly to procedural shapes.
Alt + Click Generator / Cloner – Automatically parent the selected object under the new generator
C – Convert primitive/generator to Editable Object
3 – Switch to Polygon Mode
S – Frame selected object in the viewport
Shift + Click (in MoGraph Selection) – Add clones to current selection / hide selection group
Ctrl + Drag – Duplicate selected object or geometry in the viewport
